The DJ legend suffered some hard times in recent years, including a DUI and the loss of his father, so the new record was reportedly a cathartic endeavor for him. His latest, Die Cut, brings together more disparate sounds and diverse talents (Biz Markie, Deantoni Parks of The Mars Volta, actress Erika Christensen, Farmer Dave Scher, Dexter Story). As always, La Luz’s party atmosphere and eye candy quotient go beyond the art show: a beer bash usually goes down in the parking lot and there’s late night shopping in the adjacent Soap Plant/Wacko store. Participants were chosen from tens of thousands of submissions and narrowed down to 65, with 160 pieces in the show, all reflecting the 30+-year-old art space’s irreverent take on pop surrealism. Recognized as a major influencer and purveyor of lowbrow art, La Luz exhibits encompass folk art and religious iconography, comics and hot rod culture, retro and punk imagery, and more.
